Where to take Senior Photos on the University of Texas Campus?

Hello, Fellow Longhorn: Congratulations on graduating from UT! Here are my Top 10 most popular spots on campus for Senior Photo Sessions.

They don’t call it Forty Acres for nothing. Since the University of Texas campus is so large, it’s good to be strategic when planning your College Senior Photo Sessions.

Here are my Top 10 favorite locations. Prioritize your favorite ones when planning your photo session on campus.

1. University of Texas Tower

Why It’s Great: It’s the most recognized symbol on campus. And there’s lots of variety possible through different angles and distances.  (FYI: It’s due to have construction starting in November 2024 and lasting for several years).

Tips: Afternoon sessions cast the best light on the tower. Keep in mind this popular spot can get very crowded on weekends close to graduation.

2. Littlefield Fountain

Why It’s Great: Elegant and classic, and just a short walk from the UT Tower, this fountain is a timeless favorite. The flower beds next to the fountain also make lovely backdrops.

Tips: Bring a bottle of champagne for a celebratory pop! And if you want to get in the fountain, have this be the last stop of your photo shoot. And pack a towel for afterwards 🙂

3. Mary Gearing Hall

Why It’s Great: This spot has great views of the Tower as well.

Tips: You can pose by the gate with the Tower in the background or perch on the fountain in the courtyard.

4. Battle Hall’s Architecture Doors

Why It’s Great: These green/blue doors add a pop of color and architectural charm.

Tips: You might have a long line to wait in for your turn at the doors. Nearby Sutton Hall also has a lovely blue door to use instead.

Why It’s Great: You can get another angle with the Tower in the background as well as the schools name.

Tips: Climb up and get your horns ready.

7. Moody Bridge, College of Communication

Why It’s Great: The bridge’s sleek and modern look is a contrast to some of the older architecture on campus.

Tips: We can use the leading lines of the bridge to center you in your cap & gown.

8. MLK Statue

Why It’s Great: It’s in a quieter part of campus.

University of Texas – College Friends Senior Photo Session

Fraternity Brothers’ College Senior Photo Session at the University of Texas

This group of six college friends wanted a photo session right before graduation at the University of Texas in Austin.

six college seniors in front of the tower at the university of texas at austin

We made sure to get plenty of individual shots as well as the whole group in front of the major landmarks on campus – the Tower and the Fountain.

If you’re also interested in having a College Senior Photo Session at the University of Texas, check out my essential tips below.

Tips for Senior Photo Sessions at the University of Texas:

  • Right before Graduation, Campus gets pretty full of other photo sessions, so try and plan early or choose off-times for your photos (or be okay with waiting for your turn in front of popular spots)
  • Iron your regalia
  • You can pose in your full cap and gown, part of your regalia, regular clothes or any combination of the above
  • If you have a particular spot on campus that means a lot to you (ex. where you took the majority of your classes), let your photographer know
  • If your family will be in town, we can add-on a mini-family photo session
  • Get ready to “Hook ‘Em Horns!”

University of Texas – Blanton Museum Courtyard – Family Session

University of Texas – Blanton Museum Courtyard – Family Session

Art on campus, bright colors and exploring the Capitol Mall grounds

The last time I photographed this family, we went to Waterloo Greenway Park for a fall photo session.

This year, we went to the University of Texas, Blanton Museum Courtyard area. I love the vibrant colors – especially the greens and yellows we used as backdrops.

Tips for Photo Sessions around the Blanton Museum

  • Make sure to check the Blanton Museum events calendar before you book and the University of Texas home football game schedule
  • Garage parking is available at the Brazos Garage on MLK next door
  • The Museum is closed on Mondays – so the area is the least crowded then (or go when the University of Texas students are on a school break)
  • Let your clients know how colorful the backdrops are if they want to go vibrant with their outfits
  • If you want to take any photos inside the Museum, permission is required

Please check out some of my favorite images below and contact me if you’d like to book your own photo session.

1. What prompted you to have this photo session? Each fall, we schedule family photo session with Stephanie for our holiday cards.  Our son went to preschool with Stephanie’s sons and she’s been taking our pictures since he was 3.

2. How did you choose your location for your session? Stephanie always has great suggestions – we try to alternate outdoorsy and more urban locations.  Stephanie suggested the Blanton and it was perfect!

3. What advice would you give to others planning a similar photo session? Go with the flow. Our now 13-year old who was always happy to smile for the pictures and was incredibly easy at photo sessions.  This year, he was definitely 13 and only giving us occasional half-smiles, but Stephanie was wonderful about it.  I am sure I will look back at this year’s photos and remember the struggle that was age 13.  ?

4. Anything else you’d like to add about working with Stephanie Friedman Photography? We LOVE taking our annual pictures with Stephanie!  She’s the best.

How to Prepare for your Headshot Session

How to Prepare for your Headshot Session

What goes into a successful headshot photo session?

So, you’ve done the first step – booked your headshot session. What comes next?

  • As the photographer, I’ll start by asking you some questions about what you do for a living and how you want to use your new photos.
  • Depending on your answers – we’ll work together to pick a location.
  • You will be responsible for choosing your outfits (though I’ll send you some general guidance ahead of time) and getting your hair and face camera-ready
  • At your session, I’ll provide plenty of instructions to make you feel comfortable and confident
  • After your session, I’ll do some light retouching to provide you with an accurate but flattering new profile picture
list showing what the photographer does and what the client does to prepare for a headshot session

Please check out some of my favorite images from a recent headshot portrait session below and contact me if you’d like to book your own photo session.

1. What prompted you to have this photo session? I haven’t had new headshots since 2014 – almost 10 years! A little over a year ago, I become the Chief Business Officer for the College of Education. My intention was to align new headshots with my new role. I’ve been a bit busy (ha!) – and I’m finally happy to get new headshots that match me as a person now.

2. How did you choose your location for your session? Nothing like the appeal of 1970s architecture to really inspire you! It’s work. My work location chose it for me. Do I wish I still worked in the Tower – yeah – she’s pretty. But, Stephanie did a fantastic job at finding compelling, artistic spots to shoot at, given what she had to work with. kudos!

3. What advice would you give to others planning a similar photo session? All the external stuff was easy – clothes, hair, make-up. i think wrangling the inner dialogue is the hard part. it’s all about telling yourself you’re a badass and then believing it.

4. Anything else you’d like to add? Posing can feel really awkward, especially as an adult. Fun fact, I learned my serious face is my mom face.  Stephanie’s directions were straight-forward and easy to follow – I felt immediately comfortable once we got going. Turns out, posing can also be really fun.
