Sisters Photo Session – Sekrit Theater

Summer morning photo session in East Austin artspace

When one of your best friends comes to town with her kids, even if the temperatures are humidly hot, you make time for a photo session.

So while this family was visiting Austin from Boston, we squeezed in a kids-only photo session between their schedule of eating tacos, seeing extended family and going swimming.

We met at the fantastic artspace in East Austin, the Sekrit Theater. I had sent them some sample photos taken at that spot before we met up, so they knew which backdrops were their favorite – and we could prioritize where to shoot first.

Tips for Summer Photo Sessions at Sekrit Theater:

Start early. Bookings are available 24 hours/day. We picked a 7am start time to get that pretty sunrise light and slightly cooler temperatures.
Wear something light and breezy. These girls picked flowy sundresses.
Bring a hair tie in case you want to put your hair up halfway through your photos.
I’ll bring fans and water to help you cool off during the session.

What prompted you to have this photo session? I am a huge admirer of Stephanie’s family photos. She has mastered her craft and captures joy and beauty in all her subjects. We live across the country but were in Texas for a few weeks when Stephanie generously offered to photograph my girls. Despite being past the ideal weather for a photo shoot, we managed to meet at dawn for the session.
What do you plan to do with your digital photos? I plan to share the digital photos with my family and have a few prints made to give as gifts to loved ones. I will also frequently revisit the photos to remind my girls of the special bond they share and the moments when they enjoy each other’s company.
How did you choose your location for your session? Stephanie provided me with a wide range of location options, both free and with fees. I was looking for a location with diverse backgrounds that would appeal to my preteen and teen, as well as a private setting to avoid any embarrassment. The Sekrit Theater was the ideal location for my girls, as they felt comfortable and could choose their preferred backgrounds.
What advice would you give to others planning a similar photo session? While late June or early July may not be the best time for a photo shoot due to heat and humidity, if you must schedule during this time, it’s best to do so early in the day. Stephanie was highly efficient in quickly moving the girls through the shoot, and she provided them with fans and water to keep them comfortable.
Anything else you’d like to add about working with Stephanie Friedman Photography? I highly recommend Stephanie Friedman Photography. Stephanie is not only professional and creative, but she is also exceptional at working with preteens and teens. Her thoughtfulness as a photographer is evident in her excellent shots and her ability to manage a family through a photo shoot. Five out of five stars!

The D. Family – Holiday Portrait Session

During the booking process, I ask families what they plan to do with their photos and where they want to meet (urban vs. nature setting, North Austin vs. South Austin, etc.)

For their portrait session, this Austin family wanted updated pictures for their holiday card and asked for an urban background. So we headed down to South Congress to explore the shops and spots down there. (I feel like every time I go down that street, I see new murals or colorful details to include). We walked several blocks – starting at the “I love you so much” mural and ending our shoot at the Big Top Candy Shop.

The whole family was a delight to photograph. Their youngest entertained us with skipping down the street, being swung in the air and showing her clear delight at the giant lollipop she got at our last spot. Their oldest was so sweet and patient with her younger sister and was game to pose in front of foliage and murals alike. Credit goes to Mom for picking out well-styled coordinated outfits and being an extra set of eyes and hands for fixing hair gone astray. Thanks to Dad for goofing around behind me to get those natural smiles out of the girls.

1. How do you know Stephanie Friedman Photography?

I first met Stephanie when she set up a photo booth at a friend’s birthday party (pics here). The pictures were so fun! A few months later, Stephanie had a photo shoot that I participated in for a friend’s new business (pics here). She was so easy to work with that I asked her on the spot to set up a family photo session.

2. What was your favorite part of your photo session?

The ease and preplanning of it. Stephanie gave us a lot of information up front about the photo session, including different location choices, dates and times, and suggestions on what to wear. She followed up with us to make sure we were all set. Once we got there, pictures seemed easy because she had already scoped out the area and had some ideas in mind. While she suggested poses, she also improvised on what was working for our family. It was very low key and we had fun with it.

3. What advice would you give to other families planning a photo session?

I would say to not stress, but do the pre-planning so that when you show up for the session, you can just go with the flow. If you have kids, take the advice from Stephanie to make sure they are fed, cleaned-up, and well rested. And if nothing else, bribe them to smile pretty 🙂

The A. Family – Spring Portrait Session

Reading this family’s answers to my client questionnaire, it said that their youngest was “in a phase of refusing to have her picture taken.” And when I got to their house, she was hiding under a table. But once we got started, and I got to meet all her stuffed animals, we had a blast. Lots of giggles and climbing and booty-shaking.

The L. Family – Two-Part Family Photo Session

This lovely family got a two-part photo session. We started out in the fog at the Butterfly Bridge and Central Library – but once the rain started, we had to call it quits. So we met up again at the park behind Central Market for some additional family pics.
