Classic Car on an Austin Rooftop – Senior Photo Session

Tips on Bringing a Car to your High School Senior Photo Session | Austin Senior Photography

The first time I got to photograph this High School Senior was back in 2012.

This year, for her High School Photo Session, she wanted to include her love of classic cars.

So, her mom rented a beautiful 1965 Ford Mustang, and I suggested we meet on the rooftop the Convention Center Garage in Downtown Austin.

If you live in Austin and are also interested in having a car at your Senior Photo Session, check out my tips below.

Tips for Including a Car during your High School Senior Photo Sessions:

CLEAN IT UP: Make sure the car is clean and ready before your session. The shinier the car, the more fun you can have with reflections.
LOCATION: Saftety first! I’ll suggest a location that means we’re not on a busy road or illegal spot. My top choice would be one of the downtown garage rooftops. Blog Post with suggestions around Austin HERE. But we can try and match the style of car to the environment. For example, if you have an old truck, we could look for a more rustic, country setting.
RENTALS: If you don’t have a family connection to a car, you could also check out some of Austin’s Classic Car Rentals sites or Driveshare.
MATCH THE VIBE: Consider your outfit and how it would compliment the style, color and age of the car.
CREATIVE POSING: You don’t just need to stand by the car. With the owner’s permission, we can photograph you behind the wheel, leaning on the hood or looking at the engine.
LIGHTING: If it’s later in the day, have the owner turn the car’s headlights on for some fun dramatic lighting
DETAILS: If you’ve got a custom license plate, special bumper sticker or are really proud of an engine you rebuilt, we can make sure to get detail shots of your car as well

Butler Park – High School Senior Photo Session

Butler Park in South Austin | High School Senior Photos

I last saw this High School Senior for his family’s yearly holiday photo session in the Blanton Museum Courtyard.

For his Senior Year photos, he requested a mix of urban and nature. So, we met up at Butler Park in South Austin.

He also brought his guitar for some photos.

Tips for Senior Photo Sessions at Butler Park:

Nearby parking can fill up quickly (especially on weekends) at Butler Park – give yourself enough extra time to arrive if you need to pay to park at the Long Center next door and then walk over
There is a park restroom you can use for outfit changes
You can get a lovely combination of skyline, water and nature from the boardwalks at the Park
Make sure to keep an eye on local event calendars to make sure there aren’t conflicts for your session date

What prompted you to have this photo session? We wanted to commemorate the end of high school and celebrate the beginning of the college journey.
What do you plan to do with your digital photos? We’ll share the digital images with family and create a less formal graduation announcement to send to friends.
How did you choose your location for your session? We were looking for a location that offered natural and urban elements. The Austin skyline view from Butler Park was perfect!
What advice would you give to others planning a similar Senior photo session? Take the time to choose clothing that brings you joy and makes you feel comfortable. Consider bringing items that tie into your interests or hobbies to take it up a notch!

Rowing Dock + Downtown Rooftop – Senior Photo Session

Austin Rowing Club Dock + Downtown Rooftop| High School Senior Photos

The first part of this Senior’s photo session took place at Zilker Park. We took photos around Rock Island and on the Ladybird Lake Trails with her family last month.

For the second part of her Senior Session, we had a few delays.

It was due to:

An SXSW Installation at her second location
Spring rain and rain and rain
Dock construction

So, we had to wait a few weeks to meet up again to finish her Senior Photos. This month we met at the Austin Rowing Club docks and then walked back to our parking garage to go up to the roof for some photos as well.

Then we found out that you’re not allowed to take photos on this particular garage’s rooftop. (The Security Guards were very nice when they asked us to leave) So, enjoy these photos – since I won’t be going back to that garage rooftop location again.

If you live in Austin and are also interested in having a Photo Session at the Austin Rowing Club Docks, check out my tips below.

Tips for Senior Photo Sessions at the Austin Rowing Club Docks:

Check the Rowing Club website and social media to make sure they’re not having an event on your session date (following them on social media was how I learned about their new dock construction)
Sunset is the best time to get great light on the Austin skyline from the Docks
Be prepared to pay for parking downtown and then walk a block or two to the Docks
You could also consider renting a cute Retro Boat for your Senior Photo Session (rental prices start at $160)
Make a plan to eat dinner in Downtown Austin after your session

Downtown Austin Rooftop – Senior Photos

Tau Ceti Mural + Rooftop Portraits | Austin Senior Photo Session

For this High School Senior’s Photo Session, she wanted an urban backdrop. We met at the Tau Ceti Mural in Downtown Austin, and then took the elevator to the top of the nearby parking garage.

Her mom brought her swimming goggles and future college gear for us to use in her photo session. I also loved how many Exit signs we got to include.

Tips for High School Senior Photo Sessions at Tau Ceti + Austin Rooftops:

Lots of folks may be taking photos in front of the Tau Ceti mural – be ready to wait your turn
For the mural – shoot wide to ensure more colors are viewable in your image
Then go to the Convention Center garage next door and drive or take the elevator up to the roof
There may be other photo sessions up there – but it’s a large space with a variety of backgrounds (the buildings look best at sunset)
Seniors – be prepared to change outfits in your car
Go eat nearby at the Fareground Food Hall after your session

Seaholm District – High School Senior Photos

Downtown Photo Session in the Seaholm Area | Austin Senior Photographer

This Class of 2025 McCallum High School Senior picked the Seaholm District for his photo session location.

For his portrait session, we met at the Seaholm Plaza by Trader Joe’s and walked around downtown near the Central Library.

If you live in Austin and are also interested in having your Senior Photo Session in this part of town, check out my tips below.

Tips for High School Senior Photo Sessions in the Seaholm District in Downtown Austin:

PARKING: Garage parking is available at the Central Library or Trader Joes nearby (and if you shop at Trader Joes afterwards, they validate parking)
LOCATIONS: There’s a great variety of urban and nature backgrounds in a few block radius. Make sure you take advantage of all the different backdrops available.
TRAFFIC: This area is very popular, so expect other photo shoots to be happening at the same time and take your turn in front of popular spots. You will also have literal car traffic going across the Butterfly Bridge, so be careful when photographing there. Have a parent be a spotter for oncoming cars.
OUTFIT CHANGES: If the Central Library is open, you can use their restroom for outfit changes during your session.
