Pease Park – High School Senior Photos

Pease Park – High School Senior Photos

What to expect at your Pease Park Photo Session | Austin Senior Photographer

This Lake Travis High School Senior requested Pease Park as her photo session location.
Pease Park is located in Central Austin between along Lamar Blvd. from 15th St. to 31st St. Their main entrance is at Kingsbury Commons (1100 Kingsbury St.)

We started at the Live Oak Meadow and explored the park heading South. Some rain clouds followed us – but we were able to wait out the showers. I had an umbrella she could use when the rain picked up. The forecast had NOT called for rain that night. But April showers bring May flowers, so we made the best of it.

If you’d also like to have a Senior photo session at Pease Park, here are my tips below:

  1. PARKING: There is a small parking lot at 1100 Kingsbury St with 18 spots. There is limited parking available on Parkway, south of Kingsbury, that is free during the week and pay-to-park on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Live Oak Meadow also has a small parking lot and street parking along Parkway, North of Kingsbury. More details HERE. I usually recommend parking near the Live Oak Meadow.
  2. OPERATING HOURS: The park is open from 5am-10pm daily.
  3. LOCATIONS: Main features include the Live Oak Meadow, the Tudor Cottage (with string lights across the courtyard), the metal Treehouse Observation Pod and Malin the Troll sculpture. Shoal Creek also runs through the park (water levels vary throughout the year).
  4. WARDROBE: We’ll be doing some walking from one of the park to another, so wear (or bring) comfortable shoes.
  5. SCHEDULE: Check their Events page before you book.
  6. FOOD / RESTROOMS: There are currently three food trucks on site – Tex-Mex, Coffee and Snowcones. There is also a restroom near the Treehouse.
  7. NEARBY RESTAURANTS: If you’d like to go out for dinner after your photo session at Pease Park, some nearby favorites include: Galaxy Cafe (very kid-friendly), Jeffrey’s (upscale date night), Cipollina (Italian bistro).
  8. DOG-FRIENDLY: Yes, this park is definitely dog-friendly.
  9. WHAT TO BRING: It’s optional, but some prop ideas are listed HERE for Seniors.

    Client Feedback and Advice

    1. What do you plan to do with your digital photos? I wanted to use senior photos for my Instagram page.
    2. How did you choose your location for your session? I had been to Pease park before and thought it looked like a cool background for the photos.
    3. What advice would you give to others planning a similar Senior photo session? Be prepared for rain. Even though it did rain a little off and on during the shoot, we were able to take advantage of the times the rain stopped and got the shots. Be ready to go with poses and props, & having someone there to assist with that can really help when you’re up against the weather.

Stephanie Friedman first picked up a camera in high school, went on to study photojournalism at the University of Texas (Hook ‘Em), then worked as a photo researcher in educational publishing for over 20 years.

During all that, she’s been photographing Families and Seniors for the last 10 years. You can count on her to be communicative and organized before your session. She’ll help you feel relaxed and confident during your session. And you’ll have a smile on your face after your session once you see your new photos.

Tips for Portrait Sessions at Zilker Botanical Gardens | Austin Senior Photographer

If you’d like a year-round green space for a Senior Portrait Session, one photo location I recommend is Zilker Botanical Gardens.
This 28-acre botanical garden is located in South Austin in Zilker Park. Scenic sections include a Japanese Garden, a rose garden and shady walking trails.

If you’d like to have your Senior Portrait Session at Zilker Botanical Gardens, check out my tips and recommendations below. (The ability to do a split in the Butler Window is optional)

If you’d also like to have a photo session at Zilker Botanical Gardens, here are my tips below:

        1. LOCATION FEE: There is a $50 location fee for professional photo sessions at the Gardens. Sessions must end 30 minutes before the Garden closes and start two hours before that. So you may not get “golden hour” during your session.
        2. EVENTS CALENDAR: Check out their Events calendar in case of conflicts.
        3. PARKING: There is a parking lot in front of the gardens. They also have overflow parking available a short walk away.
        4. OPERATING HOURS: Photo Sessions are available from 9am-4:30pm Sept. – May. Photo Sessions are available from 8am-3:30pm in June – August.
        5. LOCATIONS: Popular features include the “keyhole” Butler Window, the various pergolas and the flowering gardens. There’s also a small waterfall in the prehistoric garden section.
        6. RESTROOMS: There are public restrooms around the grounds you can use to change outfits in. The nicest ones are next to the giftshop.
        7. NEARBY RESTAURANTS: If you’d like to go out for dinner after your photo session, Barton Springs has lots of great options including Chuy’s Mexican Restaurant, Juliet Italian Kitchen and Green Mesquite BBQ.
        8. DOG-FRIENDLY: Yes, as long as they are on leash. Check the FAQs.
        9. WHAT TO BRING: It’s optional, but some prop ideas are listed HERE for Seniors.

If you’d also like to have a photo session at Butler Park, here are my tips below:

          1. PARKING: There is a small paid parking lot off of Barton Springs Road. Use the Park ATX app to pay Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm and on Saturdays from 12pm-5pm. If the parking lot is full, you can also look for street parking along Riverside Dr. or in the pay lot at the Long Center.
          2. OPERATING HOURS: The park is open from 5am-10pm daily.
          3. LOCATIONS: Main features include the Doug Sahm Hill (with those downtown Austin skyline views), an open meadow, walking trails, three docks overlooking the pond and some flower beds.
          4. RESTROOMS: There are public restrooms near the Alliance Children’s Garden you can use to change outfits in.
          5. EVENTS: Keep an eye on local event calendars to make sure there aren’t major conflicts nearby at the Palmer Events Center or the Long Center.
          6. NEARBY RESTAURANTS: If you’d like to go out for dinner after your photo session at Butler Park, some nearby favorites include: Terry Black’s BBQ, Mexican Restaurant El Alma, and dine-in or drive-through Sandy’s Hamburgers
          7. DOG-FRIENDLY: Yes, this park is definitely dog-friendly.
          8. WHAT TO BRING: It’s optional, but some prop ideas are listed HERE for families and HERE for Seniors.

            Client Feedback and Advice

            1. What prompted you to have this photo session? Excited to capture this period of change and transition for Brody.
            2. How did you choose your location for your session? Butler Park was a great mix of natural feel while still capturing the spirit of being in Austin.
            3. What advice would you give to other High School Seniors planning a similar photo session? I would encourage students to bring the instrument or “prop” that shows who they are and what they have spent their time on in high school. Brody was on the fence about bringing it, but ultimately was really glad he had it.
            4. Anything else you’d like to add about working with Stephanie Friedman Photography? Stephanie is so great to work with. She scouted the park to ensure it was in a shape that would photograph well, and super flexible with weather. She made Brody feel comfortable quickly and came up with creative angles and shots. Two thumbs up!
